Which type works best in a cold conservatory or utility room?
For rooms routinely below roughly 10°C, consider a desiccant machine first. For rooms kept warm by the central heating, a compressor normally offers lower electricity consumption for a similar amount of moisture removed. Between 10°C and 15°C, compare each actual model rather than following a fixed temperature rule.
Look beyond a 20L label. The headline rating is often measured in much warmer, wetter air. An 8L desiccant can outperform a 20L compressor at 10°C even though the numbers on the boxes suggest the reverse.

Measured manufacturer extraction under controlled conditions, not laundry drying test results. DD8L Pro figures use the highest fan setting. Electricity draw is while actively running, not a daily average.
Rated to operate from 1°C. Laundry mode, a 2-litre tank and three fan settings. The highest setting extracts considerably more water at 10°C than the tested compressor but needs 630W while active at that condition.
Trade-off: stronger cold-room extraction versus higher hourly electricity demand and fan noise.
Meaco publishes 8.50L/day at 20°C / 60% RH and 207W. In a 10°C room it drops to 3.35L/day and 176W. It is rated to operate down to 5°C, but that does not imply strong extraction at 5°C.
Trade-off: potentially cheaper moisture removal in a heated room, but reduced speed in the cold.
This compressor was listed out of stock at Meaco on 24 October 2026. Tracked Awin link for stock and specification checks; do not assume immediate availability.
What about tracked Amazon products?
Our only tracked Amazon Sellers dehumidifier is the AEOCKY 25L-labelled compressor pictured below. It could be worth considering for a heated room, but we cannot recommend it for an unheated space until its extraction at 10°C is verified. The Meaco models remain independent specification benchmarks; Meaco's newly approved Awin programme now allows tracked manufacturer links. The DD8L Pro was available when checked, while the Arete Two 20L was out of stock.
If damp comes from a leaking roof or wall, repair that problem; a dehumidifier cannot correct it.
Will a desiccant dehumidifier heat the room?
It releases warmth as it runs, but should not be treated as a replacement for appropriate room heating. Include the higher input wattage in your cost estimate.
Do I need the 20L model in a small cold room?
Not automatically. Room moisture, temperature and speed matter more than floor area alone. A 12L compressor may be adequate in a normally heated flat; see our small-flat guide.
